Frequently Asked Questions
The following are basic questions we are commonly asked.  We also have specific FAQs on the pages for ultrasound probes and skin scrubbers that provide more information about these devices.
  • What is ultrasound? Is it similar to ultrasonic?
Ultrasound and ultrasonic are interchangeable words for the same concept.  Ultrasound is a continuous cycle of sound waves at a frequency that is ≥ 20 KHz. Ultrasound technology is safe when it is used as directed and is a growing trend in skin care.  Ultrasound probes and skin scrubbers are gentler methods of skin care that have proven to be extraordinarily effective in regimens such as facial cleansing and topical product infusions.
For more technical information regarding ultrasound, please refer to our other website: http://www.skinspatula.com/FAQs.htm
  • What is the difference between ultrasound probes and ultrasound skin scrubbers?
Ultrasound probes have a flat metal surface that is placed directly on the skin for product permeations, tissue massage, and temporary pain relief.  These devices come in either 1, 2, or 3 MHz and are not capable of exfoliations.
Ultrasound Skin Scrubbers utilize an oscillating blade that ranges from 20 KHz to 40 KHz. It is glided along the skin to exfoliate the skin of impurities and can also permeate topical nutrients. Skin scrubbers can either be tabletop full-size scrubbers (Skin Spatula) or cordless handheld scrubbers
  • Why are ultrasound probes 1, 2, or 3 MHz and how do I choose a frequency?
If a vendor tries to sell you an ultrasound probe that contains different levels of frequency all in one device, it is most likely a FRAUD. Unless the device is an ultrasound device used for medicinal purposes (and selling for a few thousand dollars), it is very unlikely the device has 1, 2, AND 3 MHz settings.  A more probable conclusion is that the different levels of power refer to high, medium, and low for a single frequency.
1 MHz ultrasound waves permeate the deepest into tissue so it is for BODY use only.  Since it is so powerful, it can damage your facial tissue if you use it on the face.  For facial treatments, we recommend either 2 or 3 MHz.  3 MHz is used mainly on the face since it permeates the least deeply and 2 MHz can be safely used on both the face and body.
Bellaire Industry is the only manufacturer of 2 MHz ultrasound probes so please do not be misled by other companies who claim to have 2 MHz ultrasound probes.
When purchasing an ultrasound probe it is EXTREMELY important that you know what frequency the device is.  Many of the ultrasound probes on the market today are 1 MHz probes that are sold as 2 or 3 MHz probes.  As mentioned above, using the wrong frequency on the face could cause tissue damage.  Make sure you purchase the device from a trustworthy company who can assure you the probes are the frequency they are being sold at.
  • How do I choose a Skin Scrubber? What frequency is best?
Similarly to ultrasound probes, there are a lot of misconceptions regarding skin scrubbers.  The frequency range of skin scrubbers on the market today is from 20 KHz to 40 KHz.  The average is 25 KHz. Just because a machine has a higher frequency does NOT mean it will perform more effectively or give better results.  The most important component is the power intensity output level.  Unfortunately this is not really a measurable component in terms of number, but an easy way to find out if a device is effective is to test various scrubbers on different parts of your skin by:
Apply some water to one part of your arm and glide a scrubber along that area.  Then wet another part of your arm and use another scrubber there.  Repeat for as many scrubbers you are comparing.  Feel which scrubber had the strongest oscillating rate against your skin during the test.  After the test, feel which area of your skin is softest.  Of course, this test is easiest to do at a tradeshow but some companies offer 30 days free trials for their devices.  The most important thing is to test the machines.
Most of the time, the cost has a lot of correlation with the quality of the device.  Cheap scrubbers or probes are made from cheap materials meaning the device will have a very short life.  Very expensive devices (ranging upwards of $5000) don't necessarily guarantee the best quality either.  Some of these $5000 scrubbers sell for only US$750 in other parts of the world.
  • How does tabletop machines compare to cordless scrubbers?
Tabletop machines will ALWAYS be more powerful than cordless scrubbers simply due to the power source.  Tabletop scrubbers have continuous electricity from a power socket while cordless scrubbers run on rechargeable lithium ion batteries.  These batteries are similar to cellphone batteries in that they become less powerful over time and as charge decreases.  Tabletop scrubbers are more suited for professional use.  There are some cordless scrubbers that are capable of professional use in spas and salons, but for the most part, they simply do not have as high of a power intensity output level.  You can decide for yourself by testing the strength of the blade oscillation rate against your skin with a tabletop scrubber and a cordless scrubber.
It is also important to note: cordless scrubber batteries have a finite lifespan.  Cheaper devices have a shorter battery life and need to be replaced after a certain number of charges or 3 months of use.  Good batteries can last about 18 months depending on the use rate and treatment of the device.
ALL  scrubber batteries (regardless of what brand it is) need to be replaced by the manufacturer or company you bought the device from.  This is because the entire device needs to be opened for battery replacement and then resealed.  Some companies do not offer you this service and you are stuck with a useless scrubber and need to purchase a new one entirely.  Make sure you ask the vendor if they provide after-sale servicing like battery replacements.
